It’s no surprise with the success of Avengers ( becoming the third highest grossing movies in history) that Warner Bros has hired screen writer Will Beall (Castle, upcoming Gangster Squad) to pen the script for a Justice League Film.
With their franchises ending (Harry Potter, Twilight) Warner Bros turns to the DC heroes to keep them at the top of the box office. Although they have had a lot of success with Christopher Nolan’s Batman, other DC properties such as Green Lantern and Superman Returns have fallen flat, making a Justice League film a huge gamble; especially since they plan to jump right in with a full team movie.
But that doesn’t mean JLA doesn’t have its advantages over Avengers.
Characters: Sure there are kids playing with Hawkeye Nerf bows and arrows now but before the first IronMan film, even the main characters weren’t house hold names. Characters like Captain America, IronMan and Thor were almost exclusively known to fanboys and girls of your local comic shop. Unlike the DC Heroes, people world wide know who Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are. This gives Warner Bros a huge advantage and the opportunity to jump right into a team movie.
Franchises: As mentioned before Warner Bros’ hasn’t had much luck outside of Batman with DC Character franchises. A Justice League movie creates the opportunity to spin off brand new franchises from characters that wouldn’t normally be considered for a feature film, but also gives WB the chance to reboot character and properties that didn’t work the first time.
Threat: Every classic Justice League story has to include a universe shattering threats, something worthy of the attention of the Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Originally in 2007 Warner Bros commissioned a script that featured Max Lord as the big baddie. Now although writers like Geoff Johns, Judd Winick and Greg Rucka have made Max Lord into kind of a badass, we have to treat this movie like we’ll never get another (which might be the case). The bad guy has to be epic and DC continuity is filled with these types of villains. Everyone from Darkseid, Starro, the Legion of Doom, Amazo, and the Anti-monitor! Warner Bros needs to throw this major threat up front for the League to face and not tease it like the House of Ideas did.
This is a movie every fan of not only the Justice League but of any character in the expanded DC Comics universe has been waiting for since they were kids. Fans will really be demanding a lot from this one, and hope the WB has learned from their past mistakes.
