Review: Justice League #9

At last! After a two issue hiatus, Jim Lee reunites with Geoff Johns for the epic-to-be story arc, “The Villian’s Journey.” At the core of this new storyline, Johns and Lee are set to reveal a major new nemesis that is irrevocably linked to the Justice League. This new villain is getting the royal treatment and promises to challenge the Justice League like few have in the past.

This issue is a simple reminder of what facet of storytelling Johns knows best: Character. He has honed his talent of zeroing in on characterization through great character beats and spot-on dialogue. Moments that reveal character as well as push the story forward brilliantly meld with one another to make this an engrossing experience.

The fact that Lee has returned with his traditional, yet evolved, bold art is a boon to the series. To some it may be garish, but there is always much more than meets the eye with Lee’s art. He packs his panels with attention to detail, and for this reason his style luminously meshes and juxtaposes with that of Johns’ writing.

Time and again Johns has delivered on re-defining great characters. He excels at moving the characters down the road of natural progression. His stories are always emotionally resonant and for that reason they will stand the test of time, but it is always best to experience them the first time around.

So as Johns hits his stride as a storyteller with this issue, this is a perfect opportunity to join comicdom’s supreme super-group: the Justice League, the World’s Greatest Superheroes.
