Anyone who has picked up a Marvel comic in the month and a half has seen the preview for Avengers vs X-men #1 and knows the Phoenix is coming! Captain America and the Avengers are notified by the unexpected arrival of Nova. Last seen in last years Marvel Point One, Nova out raced the Phoenix as it destroyed the home planet of Terrax and has flown not stop to warn the Earth.
Iron Man is able to lift a sample of the Phoenix’s energy signature from Nova’s uniform and tracks traces of the phoenix already on Earth. After consulting with Wolverine Captain America finds out that every last mutant on Earth knows the Phoenix is coming for the mutant savoir, HOPE. Captain America heads for Utopia to take Hope into custody, but Cyclops and his X-men will not be giving her up without a fight.
To avoid spoilers we’re not going to go with traditional review here, instead we’re going to go with quick bullet points and talk about themes, story elements while avoiding direct details of anything we haven’t seen yet.
Now I may be in the minority here but I love John Romita Jr’s artwork. Now I know his gritty style hasn’t worked for Marvel events in the past (World War Hulk), but in a book that’s about battling it out, there’s no one better. Romita’s layouts flow like animation, his detailed action sequences feel like they literally pop out of the page. And it is an added treat to see JrJr drawing Spiderman and Thor again.
This epic, title spanning event is constructed my Marvel’s top writers, the Architects. Brian Michael Bendis pens this first issue, although I have a love / hate feeling about his dialogue issue one does a good job at setting up the conflict for both long time readers and new fans jumping on for this event. The issue gets straight to the point and really sets the stage for the epic battles to come. By the end of issue one the first shot is fired and the war has begun.
Avengers vs X-men #1 will be released Wednesday April 4th, but all you fans out there in Los Angeles and San Gabriel valley can pick it up a night early!
