Review: Steed and Mrs. Peel #1

Thanks to Boom! Studios reprinting of Steed and Mrs. Peel based on the classic, cult television series “The Avengers,” we’re given a glimpse of what made this property a favorite among die-hards. The quirkiness of the series is perfectly captured by the brilliant collaboration between writer Grant Morrison and artist Ian Gibson.

Delivering all fronts, this first issue of the six-issue mini-series is laden with the style of the Sixties. This is certainly serves as homage to another time and another place. Morrison does well to translate the appeal of the witty, off-beat television series into a comic book that captures an adventure that follows eccentrically, suave British agent John Steed and his endearing partner Emma Peel.

If there is one writer whose imagination can blend espionage, fantasy and science fiction set in a 1960’s London, it is Morrison. Combined with the extraordinary artistic talents of Ian Gibson (Mister Miracle, Judge Dredd) this book has a sense of humor.

Gibson deserves special recognition for his imaginative cartoonish, yet intricately detailed style. His strength lies in his ability to visualize a serious story that can make you smile and feel good. This gift is perfectly suited for the world these characters inhabit, and the Morrison’s brand of storytelling.

Steed and Mrs. Peel will leave you feeling nostalgic. There is a reason why these characters are fondly remembered. After the completion of this series, let’s hope Boom! Studios develops a new ongoing. In the meantime, pick up this mini-series. Enjoy it. Trust me, you can’t help but to.
