Picks of the Week: 12/14/11

By: Miguel Acedo & Peter J Mellini

Green Lantern #4: Writer Geoff Johns and artist Doug Mahnke continue to spin engrossing yarn. Sinestro, the renegade Green Latnern, continues to reveal the astonishing abilities his Green Lantern power ring is capable of as he fights to free his home world of Korugar. Is Sinestro truly the greatest Green Lantern? If he wishes to fend off one hundred vengeful Korugarian’s wielding power rings, he will have to be.

New Avengers #19: The world’s most wanted man, Norman Osborne is back to debut his New Dark Avengers. This issue sets the stage for a classic old school Avengers battle to come! Still one of the most fun teams in the Marvel Universe and is always worth picking up for the strange dynamic, hilarious dialogue and superhero action.

The Strain #1: Eisner Award-winning writer David Lapham adapts The Strain, the first book in director Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan’s vampire trilogy. This is a smart take on vampires set in our modern terrorist-fearing society. The exploration of vampirism as a gene-manipulating virus makes this race-against-the-clock thriller a compelling read as a disease control doctor tries to find a way to stop the contagion and save his city – a city that includes his wife and son.

Locke & Key: Clockworks #3: Now in the possession of the Timeshift key, all of history is open to the Locke kids. Filled with mystery, magic and horror writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez continue to create one of the best comics on the stands! If you’re not reading Locke and Key, you need to start. Check out volume one: Welcome to Lovecraft, still available in the shop.
