New 52 Review: Frankenstein Agent of SHADE #1

By: Miguel Acedo

This ain’t Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and I wouldn’t have it another other way! In Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1, writer Jeff Lemire and artist Alberto Ponticelli craft a tale of terror that will have you shrieking for more.

This series finds Frankenstein as part of a strange government organization known as S.H.A.D.E. (Super Human Advanced Defense Executive). With the world hanging in the balance, he ultimately leads an elite task force of classic reinterpretations of literary and cinematic monsters, known as the Creature Commandos.

When a northwestern town is decimated by strange malevolent monsters, S.H.A.D.E. sends in one of their best agents, Frankenstein’s wife. Her mission is to find the source of the invaders, but before she can do so, contact between her and S.H.A.D.E. ceases. Now, Frankenstein and the Creature Commandos race against the clock as they charge into the ravaged town to find his wife, stop the invasion, and save any survivors before the town is nuked.

Lemire couples his knack for ingenious offbeat storytelling with horror and science fiction, making this first issue an absorbing read, while Ponticelli’s visuals capture everything that makes horror and science fiction fascinating genres. His style lends itself to distilling the essence of fear-filled fantastic fiction.

Longtime fans of Ray Palmer will cheer as Lemire reintroduces him into the DCnU. Palmer is U.N. science liaison working with S.H.A.D.E., making sure they don’t abuse technology with their mad science. If S.H.A.D.E. has already made use of his teleportation and reduction technology, what other tech will Palmer provide in the fight against the horrifying threats that dare stand in the way of Frankenstein and the Creature Commandos?

Here, DC has brought together a strong creative team that present a fun and fresh new series that is not to be missed!

This Marvel-ite reads “Agent of S.H.A.D.E.” and can’t help but eye-roll a little. But no matter–gotta love monster mayhem, and something fresh to boot!
